Pauline Grant RIP
It is with much sadness and an extremely heavy hearts that we inform members that one of our club stalwarts Pauline Grant passed away on the 6th of February 2015. Pauline, a Life Member of the Tuna Club of Tasmania, was our much loved Radio Operator for many many years. She was affectionately known as “Mum” of the fleet and often shared some light hearted banter, a joke and even some poetry with our Tuna Fleet, particularly on days when fishing was a bit slow. We honour her each year when we present an angler with the Pauline Grant Trophy for the heaviest game fish caught on or nearest to Mother’s Day each year. Pauline’s memory will live on within our clubs traditions. We are sure she continues to watch over us as we go to sea doing what we enjoy so much. Our sincere condolences go to Pauline’s husband Don and family. Dear friend Pauline, Rest In Peace.

Tas Maritime Radio
Tas Maritime Radio (formally known as Coast Radio Hobart) has expanded their service around Tasmania. The expanded services comes about by their commissioning of two new repeater aerials situated on mountains on Tasmania’s west coast. Tas Maritime Radio now has VHF radio coverage from Flinders Island in the states north east on down the east coast, round the south and now into the west coast of Tasmania. They have changed their name to reflect the increased coverage area. They are a volunteer organisation dependant on subscriptions and donations to maintain their equipment and to also fund any improvements to their critically important service to seafarers. We encourage all our members to join and support this organisation. Our friends at Tas Maritime Radio have continued to support and assist The Tuna Club of Tasmania Inc with radio relays during our competitions and also provide us with some technical advice on improvements and upgrades we have commissioned on our own base radio equipment. The Tuna Club is extremely grateful for the assistance provided and have again this year made a donation to Tas Maritime Radio. Pictured is Club Vice President & our Chief RO Paul Turner presenting a $1000 cheque to Tas Maritime Radio’s Barry McCann at their Queens Domain base radio facility. Thankyou Tas Maritime Radio.

Ah the Ravings of an Old Crazy Bear !
Club Secretary Robin Banks has been doing a bit of reading research into some of the history of Gamefishing in Tasmania and put the following together.
Broadbill Swordfish Hunting 1969 Style, has anything changed in 45years?
Here is an article from the clubs archives provided to us by TCoT stalwart Jack Collett Many will remember Jack who for most of his working life ran a commercial fishing vessels and charter boat operations out of Pirates Bay. Thanks Jack. The article was a feature in the 1969 October addition of Rod & Gun, a Tasmanian produced magazine on all things fishing and shooting. This article describes techniques on catching Broadbill’s and a $1000 event that was run to catch one in Tasmanian waters.
Broardbill Swordfish Bonanza
Game Fishing Association of Australia (GFAA) and TARFish have teamed up in a joint partnership to generate scientific research into Broadbill Swordfish in Tasmanian waters.
Correct Tag and Release Techniques
Correct tagging techniques and placement of tags are critical to post tagged fish survival and also to the fish retaining the tag for future scientific data collection.
